The Colony, a suburb of Dallas in Denton County, Texas, is a city of approximately 37,000 residents. Originally known as Peters Colony, the city was born of a community built by American and English investors in mid-nineteenth century. The Colony also sits on the former location of the oldest community in Denton County, Bridges Settlement, which was founded under the Republic of Texas. The city was incorporated in 1977 and given its name to invoke and preserve the early history of the state.
Like most of the other suburbs in the Dallas-Ft. Worth metro area, the city maintains a series of parks and trail systems for the use of its residents and visitors. Most of these offer access to playgrounds, scenic views, picnic grounds, and undeveloped or open space areas. The Parks and Recreation department oversees programs dedicated to the sustainability of migratory bird populations, as well as unique outdoor activities like geocaching and an “Adopt a Park” program. There are two golf courses, a water park, and over 300 restaurants, including Studio Movie Grill, a trendy locale where customers can enjoy their meals in the comfort of padded reclining chairs while watching new-release movies on the big screen.
Despite its growth, The Colony still has more that 700 acres of undeveloped land, much of it along one of the major thoroughfares, State Highway 121. The bordering Lewiston Lake offers residents and visitors ample contact with nature. The city is home to a number of master-planned communities, many of which have not yet reached completion, which means that not only is there physical space for incoming families to plant roots, but many economic opportunities to take advantage of, as well.
